The French brought turquoise to the West for trade from Turkey. These incredibly high quality stones actually came from Persia (Iran). It was named turkey stone or turquoise in French. Persian turquoise is still the standard by which all other turquoise is measured.
Turquoise has been a coveted stone for thousands of years. Egyptians mined turquoise more than two millennia ago. Turquoise adorned ceremonial jewelry and funerary goods.
Turquoise is sacred to the ancient beliefs of the Navajo and Pueblo peoples.
